61 crorepatis in Kerala Assembly

Thiruvananthapuram: Nine newly elected members entering the Assembly now have assets exceeding Rs. 10 crores. As many as 61 of the 140 new members  are crorepatis.

Thomas Chandy (NCP,) who was elected from Kuttanad, tops the list with assets exceeding Rs. 92.37 crores. V. K. C. Mammed Koya (CPI-M), who won the election from Beypore comes second with assets of Rs. 30.42 crores. The third richest member is K. B. Ganesh Kumar (KC-B) whose net worth is of Rs. 22.21 crores.

The other rich members are Manjalamkuzhi Ali (IUML) elected from Perinthalmana, P. V. Anvar (LDF-Independent) from Nilambur, K. Muraleedharan (Congress) from Vattiyoorkavu, M. Mukesh (CPI-M) from Kollam, Adoor Prakash (Congress) from Konni and V. Abdurahiman  (NSC) elected from Tanur. They have assets ranging from Rs. 10 crores to more than Rs. 20 crores.  Kerala Congress (Jacob) leader Anoop Jacob is just behind them with assets of Rs. 9.75 crores.

There are six members with assets of less than 10 lakhs. Of them, Muhammed Muhassin (CPI), elected from Pattambi, Eldho Abraham (CPI) from Muvattupuzha and Antony Johny (CPI-M) from Kothamangalam have no immovable assets.  The others are C. F. Thomas (KC-M) from Changanassery,  Kovoor Kunjumon (LDF Independent) from Kunnathur and O. R. Kelu (CPI-M) from Mananthavady.

According to an analysis done by Kerala Election Watch in collaboration with Association of Democratic Reforms, 15 (26%) out of 58 MLAs from CPI(M), 14 (78%) out of 18 MLAs from IUML, 13 (60%) out of 22 MLAs from INC, 5 (83%) out of 6 MLAs from Kerala Congress (M), 3 (50%) out of 6 IND MLAs, 3 (16%) out of 19 MLAs from CPI have declared assets valued more than Rs 1 crore.  The data is based on sworn affidavits submitted by the candidates to the Election Commission of India.

The average of assets per MLA who won in the 2016 assembly elections is Rs. 2.82 crores whereas the average asset for each candidate who contested in the 2016 assembly elections was Rs 1.29 crores. In 2011, the average assets per 140 MLAs analysed was Rs 1.42 crores.

Among major parties, the average assets per MLA for 58 CPI(M) MLAs analysed is Rs 1.48 crores, 22 INC MLAs have average assets of Rs 2.14 crores, 19 CPI MLAs have average assets worth of Rs 64.56 lakhs, 18 IUML MLAs have average assets of Rs 3.83 crores, 6 IND MLAs have average assets worth Rs 3.18 crores.

Men and women in the AssemblySixty per cent of the members (84 out of 140) have not declared income tax details.  Of them, 19 have assets worth more than Rs. 1 crore. The two top crorepati members who have not declared their income tax details are P. K. Sasi (Shornur) and Mammutty (Tirur).

Out of 140 MLAs, eight (6%) MLAs are women. In 2011, there were only seven (5%) women in the Assembly.
