617 cases against CPI (M) candidates

Thiruvananthapuram: There are 943 cases against various candidates in the Assembly elections.  Of this, 685 are against LDF candidates, 152 against BJP-BDJS candidates and 106 cases against UDF candidates.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said in a press release that the higher number of cases against the LDF candidates showed that the left parties were beneficiaries of politics of violence. There were 617 cases against CPI (M) alone.

The Chief Minister said that there were no cases against him while six cases were pending against the Opposition Leader V. S. Achuthanandan. Of these, five were on charges of defamation and the other was related to agitation organised in front of the Secretariat.

He further noted that there were 11 cases pending against CPI (M) leader Pinarai Vijayan including the Lavalin case. Eight cases were pending before the first class magistrate court in Thiruvananthapuram and one each in Payyannur and Taliparambu.

He noted that the largest number of cases were against Nikesh Kumar who had been introduced as debutant candidate at Azhikode by the CPI (M)—57. There were 45 cases against the CPI (M) candidate in Kazhakoottam Kadakampally Surendran. Its candidate in Thalassery A. N. Shamseer had 35 cases against him.
