Antony calls for generational change in Congress in Kerala

A. K. Antony (file photo)Kochi: Senior Congress leader A. K. Antony called for a generation change in the State unit of the Congress here on Saturday.

Addressing a convention of Congress leaders from local bodies, Mr. Antony said that there should be higher representation for youth in party fora. New leaders should emerge.

He warned that the foundation of the party was being eroded because of infighting in the party. Unity could not be achieved just by leaders taking photos together. Deeper unity should be nurtured and those who had left the party should be brought back.

However, Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala said that nothing would happen to the Congress-led United Democratic Front whoever had left it. None should hope to destroy the Front.

KPCC President V. M. Sudheeran agreed with Mr. Antony that there should be higher representation for the youth. This would be attended to when the party forums are reorganised.

Congress leader Mullappally Ramachandran said that the problem was that Mr. Antony had not intervened in organisational matters at the right time. If he had, the situation would have been different.
