Wetland amendment Bill to Subject Committee

Thiruvananthapuram: The Assembly referred the Kerala Conservation of Paddy Land and Wetland (Amendment) Bill to the Subject Committee on Wednesday.

Piloting the Bill, Revenue Minister E. Chandrasekharan said that the Bill would not come in the way of building houses on small plots of paddy land. The government policy was to promote paddy cultivation wherever the crop could be cultivated.

He agreed with Minister G. Sudhakaran about the need for strong action against reclamation of wetlands and construction of resorts, but did not say what specific action the government proposed to take.

Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan (Congress) maintained that the law was not practical. The proof of that was that the paddy lands continued to be reclaimed.

Mr. C. K. Nanu (JDS) also said that laws relating to lands went unimplemented. Officials failed to enforce them.
