Cooperatives issue: Sudheeran opposes joint stir with LDF

KPCC president V. M. SudheeranKPCC president V. M. Sudheeran has come out against UDF’s plan to launch joint agitation with the LDF in protest against crisis in the cooperative sector.

Taking a stand opposed to that of senior leader Oommen Chandy and Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala, the KPCC president said that the CPI (M) was trying to undermine UDF-controlled cooperatives in several places. So, a joint agitation could not be with the CPI (M).

Robbing legal services to pay the advocates

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Court Fees and Suits Valuation (Amendment) Bill, now before the Assembly, proposes to allocate most of the funds intended for legal services to the general public for welfare of advocates and their clerks.

The Kerala Court Fees and Suits Valuation Act specifies constitution of a Legal Benefit Fund for the purpose of providing efficient legal services to the people of the State and to provide social security measures for the legal profession. Though the Act was enacted in 1959, the Fund came into being only in 2002.

The UDF will be demanding that the enquiry into allegations of nepotism in appointments to public sector units should cover the Chief Minister’s Office too. Appointments to key posts would not have taken place without the knowledge of the Chief Minister, it says.

Revised Budget: being unfair to honest people

Revised Kerala Budget- coverIf one thing that casts doubts about LDF government’s resolve to fight corruption and black money in the revised Budget for 2016-17, it is the proposal to hike stamp duty on registration of land sale deeds from six to eight per cent.

The duty has been raised in preference to the option of raising the fair value of land across the board by 30 per cent.

The Paper accuses the previous United Democratic Government (UDF) of inflating Plan size and not providing for expenses in the annual budgets.
