Bill to promote growth of Malayalam

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Cabinet on Wednesday approved a draft Bill for development of Malayalam Language.

The draft has provisions to make Malayalam the official language of the State and propagation of the language. It will replace the Official Language Act of 1969 which specifies English and Malayalam as the official languages of the State.

MalayalamThe initial draft of the Bill had been vetted by a committee consisting of Perumbadavam Sreedharan, R. Gopalakrishnan, Dr. M. R. Thampan and Dr. K. Jayakumar. The final draft was prepared after taking into consideration the opinions of General Education and Higher Education departments, the Registrar of Kerala High Court and the Law Department.

The Committee on Official Language of the Assembly had recommended the drafting of comprehensive law on Malayalam.
