Cooperatives issue: Sudheeran opposes joint stir with LDF

KPCC president V. M. SudheeranThiruvananthapuram: KPCC president V. M. Sudheeran has come out against UDF’s plan to launch joint agitation with the LDF in protest against crisis in the cooperative sector.

Taking a stand opposed to that of senior leader Oommen Chandy and Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala, the KPCC president said that the CPI (M) was trying to undermine UDF-controlled cooperatives in several places. So, a joint agitation could not be with the CPI (M). The Congress would lead the agitation with UDF constituents.

A section of Congressmen cutting across group lines support Mr. Sudheeran. However, the Muslim League has come out in favour of joint agitation with LDF and Mr. Chennithala said that the matter would be decided at the UDF meeting scheduled for next week.

Some political observers say that though some leaders may be interested in cooperating with the CPI (M) and agitate for their interests in the cooperative sector, it may ultimately help the BJP to grow in the State. Currently, the politics in the State is polarised between the UDF and LDF. When they join hands against the Centre, it opens up an opportunity for the BJP to emerge as an alternate force in the State, especially if demonetisation succeeds in achieving its objectives.  The BJP will be able to portray the UDF-LDF combine as the one that tried to protect black-money. The charge would stick as people know that there is black money in the cooperative sector.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Cooperation A. C. Moideen said that the cooperatives had exchanged currency worth more than 21000 crores during the four days that they were allowed to replace demonetised notes.
