Election debacle: Kerala Congress blames it upon Congress

K. M. Mani, Kerala Congress (M) leaderThiruvananthapuram: Kerala Congress (Mani) has opined that the controversial decisions of the UDF Government towards the end of its term were responsible for the Front’s debacle in the Assembly elections.

Party leaders who attended the one day camp of steering committee members of the party on Wednesday added that the criticism from within the Congress over the decisions added to the problem. Their criticism of the government was even sharper than that of the Opposition.

They felt that the UDF had functioned well till the after the Aruvikkara by-election.

The leaders criticised the Congress for accusing Mr. Mani of corruption and trying to isolate him. Congress leader P. J. Kurien’s statements led to defeat of Kerala Congress (M) candidate in Thiruvalla constituency. The Congress brought down UDF constituents also when it got itself eliminated. This was what happened to RSP and others. Discussions about exchanging some seats with Congress had a negative effect.

They observed that the support of farmers helped the party to win in Idukki district. Increased vote share of the BJP in the elections benefited the LDF in 41 constituencies.
