Kerala Finance Minister K. M. Mani resigns

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Minister for Finance and Law K. M. Mani resigned as Minister today in view of the adverse remarks from High Court in the bar-bribery case.  Government Chief Whip Thomas Unniyadan also resigned in solidarity with him.

Announcing his decision, the Minister said that he was resigning expressing his regard for the rule of law. He would continue to extend unreserved support to the United Democratic Front.

Finance Minister K. M. ManiMr. Mani said that he had taken his decision in consultation with Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and others.

Asked whether he was under pressure to resign, Mr. Mani said that he was resigning voluntarily.

He said that he had expressed his wish to resign at meeting of the steering committee of the party here today and the committee had given him permission to resign. He had told the media yesterday itself that a decision would be taken after party meeting.

The resignation came after much drama. Mr. Mani had initially declined to resign and because of this the UDF could not formally meet this morning. Though the UDF met around 4 pm, it had to wait well past 8 pm for Mr. Mani to announce his decision.

The steering committee of the Kerala Congress leadership had met at 11 am this morning. But it could not arrive at a unanimous decision even after four hours of discussions. Persons loyal to Mr. Mani wanted Kerala Congress (M) Minister P. J. Joseph also to resign along with Mr. Unniyadan. But Mr. Joseph declined. His camp had met the earlier and taken firm decision against that.

So, it was announced that Mr. Mani and Mr. Joseph would take final decision after mutual consultations. However, Joseph sought time to decide and after consultations with his supporters, he conveyed his decision that he did not propose to resign. Mr. Mani’s decision came about an hour later.

He could have taken this decision much earlier.

Yes. He may have thought that it will the way the solar scam went. Moreover, the feeling that there was a conspiracy against him might have prompted him to fight back.
