Kerala to be declared drought-hit

Drought (representative picutre)Revenue Minister E. Chandrasekharan told the Assembly on Monday that all districts in the State would be declared drought-hit.
Responding to a notice for adjournment motion from V. S. Sivakumar (Congress) on drought conditions in the State, the Minister said that the rainfall during South West monsoon was deficient by 34 per cent.  There was also drop in rainfall in October -- it was 69 per cent lower than the normal.

Chennithala demands action against cooperative society for auctioning tribal’s land

Bird flu virus spreading in Kerala may not affect humans: Minister

DuckThiruvananthapuram: Forest Minister K. Raju told the Assembly on Thursday that humans were not likely to be inflected by the bird flu spreading in Alappuzha and Kottayam districts.

Replying to a submission made by Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala, the Minister said that the influenza strain identified was of type A (H5N8) which does not affect humans.

Cabinet names commission to probe police lathicharge before High Court

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Cabinet on Wednesday decided to appoint retired judge P. A. Mohammed as enquiry commission to probe police lathicharge that had taken place in front of the High Court following conflict between journalists and lawyers.

An officials release said that the Commission would enquire into events that led to the lathicharge under the Commission of Enquiries Act. As the High Court had intimated that the services of a sitting judge could not be spared for the enquiry, a retired judge was being appointed.

‘UDF delayed implementation of Food Security Act to favour wholesalers’

Thiruvananthapuram: Minister for Food and Civil Supplies P. Thilothaman said in the Assembly on Wednesday that the UDF government had deliberately delayed implementation of the Food Security Act in the State.
