Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Cabinet on Wednesday decided to form a Commission for Non-resident Indians with quasi judicial powers.
The Commission will be entrusted with the responsibility of protecting the rights and interests of NRIs from Kerala including their properties and investments in the State. It will interface with Central and State governments for the purpose and take steps to prevent operation of bogus recruitment agencies. It will also take up cases involving injustice to NRIs with concerned departments.
The Commission will be chaired by a retired Judge of the High Court. A retired IAS officer and two NRIs will be members of the Commission. An official in the rank of Joint Secretary will be secretary to the Commission. The Commission, which will be headquartered here, will meet once in three months.
The Commission could conduct enquires suo motto or on the basis of petitions received by it and submit recommendations to the Government.
The Cabinet sanctioned 66 teaching posts in 18 government colleges in the State besides 105 posts of guest lecturers.
