Thiruvananthapuram: The Opposition continued intermittent protests against Excise Minister K. Babu in Kerala Assembly on Wednesday demanding his ouster. On two occasions, they moved into the well of the House. Later, they walked out in protest against the Speaker disallowing an adjournment motion seeking discussion on rehabilitation of people affected by Vizhinjam Port project.
Intervening in the debate, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that the Opposition was targeting Mr. Babu. None of the people affected would be left high and dry. He added that the government would not be weakened by the Opposition onslaught.
Mr. Babu said that packages costing Rs. 257 crores and Rs. 475 crores had already been announced for those affected by the project. As part of it, 67 families have been rehabilitated. Any outstanding issue could be solved through discussions.
Jameela Prakasam (Janata Dal-S), who had given notice for moving the adjournment motion, said that no steps had been taken to protect the livelihoods of fishermen affected by the project. There was uncertainty about compensation for those who had lost land, homes and jobs.
